This can prove to be very dangerous, and can cause something called a shaken baby syndrome. Shaking the baby is very common especially if its crying.
Shaken baby syndrome is caused due to damage done by shaking the baby holding it by its arms, legs or shoulders. An infants blood vessels and brain are vulnerable to such sudden motion and can cause permanent damage. It can sometimes even cause irreversible brain damage, blindness, cerebral palsy, hearing loss, spinal cord injury, seizures, learning disabilities, and even death.
An estimated 1200 to 1400 cases of shaken baby syndrome occurs every year in the United States. These volumes are caused by ignorance of care takers and even parents. Many babies are suffering tragically from such ignorance in child care. Its high time that the medical community started giving attention to this ignored problem.
